Description
System for retrograde irrigation of the colon.
Transanal irrigation with Peristeen Plus is intended to facilitate the evacuation of the contents of the lower colon and the descending colon through the use of a rectal catheter with an inflatable balloon.
The product is indicated for patients suffering from fecal incontinence, chronic constipation and/or procedures for intestinal management that take time.
The product is suitable for adults (for both sexes) and children over 3 years. The Peristeen catheters package consists of ten regular rectal catheters that are self-lubricated in contact with water.
The rectal catheter is disposable.
The rectal balloon catheter is available in two sizes:
- the small catheter, labeled with a smiling face, is normally used for children;
- the regular catheter is normally used for adults.
For hygienic reasons, the Peristeen Plus transal irrigation system is a monopath.
We do not recommend the reuse of the prelubrified rectal catheter, for the risks of crusade contamination.
Reconditioning, washing, disinfection and/or re-sterilization could compromise the characteristics of the product, resulting in a further risk of physical damage or infection for the patient.
Coloplast assumes no liability for injuries or losses that may occur if the product is used in a manner that does not comply with Coloplast's current recommendations.
Transanal irrigation with Peristeen Plus should not be carried out in the following situations, since mechanical obstruction or colon tissue weakening caused by any of the following factors increases the risk of intestinal perforation, trauma or bleeding:
- anal stenosis or colorectal note;
- colorectal carcinoma (active/recidant);
- within 3 months of anal or colorectal surgery;
- within 4 weeks of an endoscopic polypectomy intervention;
- ischemic colitis;
- acute intestinal inflammatory disease;
- acute diverticulitis.
Warnings
- Transanal irrigation with Peristeen Plus is not recommended in case of ongoing or planned pregnancy since the product has not been evaluated on this patient population.
- It is essential for patient safety to consult a doctor/healthcare expert in the use of transanal irrigation with Peristeen Plus before carrying out the irrigation procedure.
- Before using this product it is necessary to receive in-depth instructions from a healthcare provider, which must also oversee the first irrigation.
- Transanal irrigation procedure must always be carried out with caution.
- Make sure that the size of the catheter (Regular or Small) indicated on the package corresponds to those recommended by the healthcare provider. The insertion of the catheter with balloons should not be forced. The perforation of the intestine occurs very rarely in transanal irrigation, but is a serious and potentially lethal complication that requires immediate hospitalization and often surgical intervention. Request immediate medical assistance if during or after the transanal irrigation procedure with Peristeen Plus one of the following conditions occurs:
- severe or prolonged abdominal pain or back pain, especially if associated with fever;
- severe or prolonged anal bleeding.
- We do not recommend the reuse and/or the washing or disinfection of the catheter with balloons as prelubrified, such operations could compromise the characteristics of the product, determining an additional risk of intestinal perforation.
- Keep the Peristeen Plus transal irrigation system out of the reach of small children and monitor the children who can be present while using the system, so as to avoid the risk of strangulation with pipes and suffocation due to small parts that may have detached from the product.
