The most common side effect was the local irritation, consisting of desquamation, erythemitis, dermatitis, dry skin, hypertricosis (in areas other than those treated), burning sensation and rash. Other side effects, which were not frequently verified, included: allergic reactions (sensitivity, hives, generalized erythema and facial edema), dizziness, formicolii, headache, weakness, neuritis, edema, irritation to the eyes, alteration of taste, ear infection (particularly external otis) and visual disorders. Following accidental ingestion, minoxidil is totally absorbed through the gastroenteric tract and can cause systemic effects related to its vasodilating action (5 ml of MINOVITAL contain 100 mg of minoxidil, maximum administerable dose in adult subjects for the treatment of hypertension). Signs and symptoms of overdose of the drug would be with all probability cardiovascular effects associated with fluid retention, lowering blood pressure and tachycardia. Liquid retention can be treated with appropriate diuretic therapy. Tachycardia can be kept under control by administering a beta blocker agent. Hypotension could be treated with intravenous administration of normal saline solution. Sympathomimetic drugs, such as norepinephrine and epinephrine, should be avoided due to their excessive heart stimulating activity. The effects of MINOVITAL used during pregnancy are not known. Minoxidil administered by systemic means is excreted in breast milk. MINOVITAL should not be used in pregnant or nursing women.
