POTASSION - POTASSIUM SALS
active ingredients
1 single-dose bag contains: potassium succinate 0.100 g (equal to 0.0401 g of K+ corresponding to mEq 1,03), potassium sick 0.100 g (equal to 0.0370 K+ corresponding to mEq 0,95), potassium citrate 0.250 g (equal to g 0.0954 of K+ corresponding to mEq 2,45), potassium tartrate 0.050 g (equal to g 0.0172 of K+ corresponding to mEq 0,44), potassium bicarbonate 0.500 g (equal to g 0.1947 of K+ corresponding to mEq 4,99). For the full list of excipients, see paragraph 6.1Excellent
Tartaric acid, lemon essence, raspberry essence, sucrose.Therapeutic indications
Potax deficiency states, also in course of acidosis such as alkaline therapy.Contraindications
Hyperkaliemia states from different causes (systematic acidosis including diabetic acid, kidney failure, states of intense and rapid dehydration, severe burns, hemolysis, crush syndrome or other afflictions that involve extensive tissue necrosis, corticosurrenal failure, administration of potassium-saving diuretics). All solid preparations containing potassium salts are contraindicated in the subjects with tubing of the gastroenteric apparatus.Population
Adult doses: from 1 to 8 sachets or more per day, according to prescription. Dose children: according to prescription. A sachet provides 1 g potassium salts of 0.384 g of potassium ion equivalent to 10 mEq. The granulate contained in the sachets can be taken without water and chewed just at a time: or it can be drunk dissolved in little water, depending on the preference. Potassion must be taken at the end of meals.Conservation
Not necessary.Warnings
The use of the preparation in the therapy of potassic depletion must be evaluated and controlled (especially in subjects with chronic kidney disease) on the basis of the data provided by ionogram, the measurement of blood pH and ECG. Overdose marks require suspension of treatment and the adoption of appropriate therapeutic measures. Moreover, the possible and concomitant modifications of the acidobase and hydro-electrolytic balance are always present both for the choice of the salt to be used both for the variations of the kaliemia that states of acidosis or alkalosis involve itself moving the cation from the cellular compartment to the interstitial one and vice versa. To avoid the effects of potassium salts on the mucosa of the digestive system it is recommended to take the diluted product in water or after meals. The product contains sucrose. This is taken into account in the treatment of diabetic patients and subjects kept on a hypocaloric diet. Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactosis mal absorption, or isomaltase sucrasis failure, should not take this medicine. Keep out of reach and sight of children.Interactions
It is appropriate not to simultaneously administer potassium salts and potassium diuretics- savers (e.g. amiloride, spironolactone, triamterene). Electrophysiological effects of antiarrhythmic products (e.g. kinidinics) can be exalted or depressed by a state of hyperpotassiemia and hypopotassiemia respectively.Effects
The following undesirable reactions were reported during treatment with Potassion, described with the MedDRA Convention on Frequency: Very common (≥1/10), Common (≥1/100, Reporting of suspicious adverse reactions The reporting of suspicious adverse reactions occurring after the authorization of the medicinal product is important, as it allows continuous monitoring of the benefit/risk ratio of the medicinal product. Healthcare workers are required to report any suspected adverse reaction through the national reporting system: Italian Pharmaco Agency, Website: http://www.agenziafarmaco.gov.it/it/responsabiliOverdosing
The intoxication from potassium salts, which may result from an excess administration, or in the presence of renal failure, or of contemporary and unspoiled source of K (aliments, potassic salts of other drugs) is generally asymptomatic and detectable by the values of kaliemia and the characteristics variations of the electrocardiographic tract (low wave P, elongation of the QT, subslivelling of ST, wave). Clinical manifestations are late and include muscle asthenia, apathy, mental confusion up to muscle paralysis and cardiocirculation collapse for cardiac arrest. In these circumstances, treatment should be suspended and appropriate therapeutic measures should be taken. No particular precaution is provided for in the circumstances.
